HSC Designs operates on a research-driven, user-centric philosophy. The firm combines client requirements, contextual challenges, climate conditions, and community needs to arrive at unconventional design solutions. All their spaces are computationally designed, factoring in user behavioral patterns, weather conditions, and site context. A defining ethos of the studio is sustainability; they are known advocates of material reuse, zero-wastage construction practices, and educating clients about the environmental cost of materials and low-impact construction. Their aesthetic draws from constructivism as both art and philosophy, and founder Hiloni Sutaria cites artists El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malevich, and Lyubov Popova as key design influences.
Notable Projects
Symbiotic Parasite - HSC Designs’ first and most celebrated project. An architectural extension to a residential bungalow in Satellite, Ahmedabad, designed as a lounge for a young creative couple. The structure’s stark contrast with the parent building led to its name. This project launched the firm’s reputation.
Versatile Decadence - A regeneration of a dilapidated outhouse featuring amorphous curves, metallic paint finishes, and a striking red pool. The project became one of the most published projects in the firm’s portfolio.
Medical Diagnostic Centre - A calming and patient-centered diagnostic space, one of its kind in the city of Ahmedabad.
Orchard Café / Plumeria Café / Epicurean Desire - A versatile café restaurant space combining luxury and recycled aesthetics. Featured in Architecture + Design India and the Interior Exterior Group blog, 2022 to 2023.
Pharmaceutical Company Guest Houses - 10 guest houses designed to house traveling employees and new talent.
Valanko ni Ramat Play of Curves - A 5,000 sq ft Montessori-inspired play space at the Shreyas Foundation School, Ahmedabad, designed for visionary client Abhay Mangaldas. House of Dynamic Sunlight - A double-height glazed residential space using high-performance glass solutions for daylight and heat management.
